The Redevelopment Authority of the City of Butler has applied for a state grant to help repair the Penn Theater.
The authority filed for a $100,000 Keystone Historic Preservation Construction Grant last month with the Pennsylvania Historical Museums Commission.
The grant does require $100,000 in matching funds which the authority hopes to raise through a grassroots community donor effort.
The money is expected to be used for structural repairs and the authority expects to hear if they have been awarded the grant in July. The authority thanked the Center for Community Resources for assisting in the preparation of the grant.
The neon lights have been repaired at the Penn Theater but there are still questions to be answered before they will once again shine on downtown Butler.
Redevelopment Authority of the City of Butler Chairman Fred Reese spoke with a representative from Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation Thursday morning about the situation.
The main issues to be determined are how much will leaving the lights on for a few hours each night cost and who will pay for that expense. The Redevelopment Authority insists that their financial situation prevents them from footing the bill.
The PHFL representative is going to talk with people in his organization and get back to Reese in the near future.
