Mars high school head basketball coach Rob Carmody has been selected as the Triple-A coach of the year by the Pennsylvania Sports Writers. Carmody led the Planets to the state championship game for the first time in school history. Their 23 wins this season was a school record. Mars sophomore Robby Carmody was named a first-team all-state selection.
Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic’s Sam Breen was named the girls Single-A state player of the year. North Catholic coach Molly Rottman was named coach of the year.

At a rainy Butler Stadium last night, the Butler Girls Track & Field team defeated North Allegheny by a score of 92 2/3 to 57 1/3.
Outstanding performances were turned in by Emily Horstman, Alexis Leech, Odile Enslen, Liz Simms and Liz Rakers. Horstman was a quad winner – she won the 100, 200 and was part of the victorious 4×1 and 4×4 relays. Alexis Leech won the 400 and was part of the victorious 4×4 relay team, Odile Enslen won the the 300 Hurdles and was part of the winning 4×1 relay and 4×4 relay teams whileLiz Simms won the 800 with an awesome kick and Liz Rakers won the Javelin on the last throw of the competition.
The girls move to 3-0 in WPIAL AAA Section 3 play. They next compete at the TSTCA Outdoor Championships at West Mifflin on Saturday.
