A former Butler County woman who conspired with her husband to steal Wal-Mart customers’ Social Security numbers will spend the next four years and nine months in prison.
A federal judge ruled on the case involving 32-year-old Jennifer MacVittie Tuesday. She is formerly of Cranberry Township.
Jennifer and 35-year-old Robert MacVittie both pleaded guilty last year to conspiracy and aggravated identity theft. Robert was sentenced to two years and 10 months in prison.
Between October 2013 and May 2014, the couple allegedly visited Wal-Marts in 22 states and stole at least 445 customers’ identifies. Jennifer would typically “shoulder surf” customers and use a smart phone to record them entering their Social Security numbers while cashing checks at the customer service center, prosecutors say.
Robert then used fake company names to make bogus company checks that they then cashed using the customers’ identities.
