Butler Area School District administrators are concerned about a shortage of substitute teachers in the Western Pennsylvania area.
Assistant Superintendents Dr. Mary Wolf and Dr. Brian Slamecka addressed the situation with the School Board Education Committee Monday night.
Every district in the area is feeling the shortage, officials say, as far less students are graduating college with education degrees than in years past. The number of student teachers has dropped dramatically and far fewer people are training to become paraprofessional aides.
Butler pays substitute teachers $80 per day, which is in the lower half of what most other districts in the area pay, but other districts who pay more are also looking for subs, officials say. Butler last increased pay for substitutes in 2005.
