It was nearly a record-breaking year for the annual Bowl For Kids’ Sake fundraiser for the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Butler County program.
Director Dan Steighner announced Thursday $47,000 was raised through Sunday’s annual bowling fundraiser, which was the 22nd annual.
“It makes me feel great,” Steighner told our newsroom. “We thought it may be a down year because of the economy but we may equal or surpass what we did last year.”
The community always comes out for this event and this year was no different. More than 135 businesses sent some 230 bowlers to Family Bowl-A-Way in Butler. Each bowler was asked to raise a minimum of $75. Bowler Larry Cicco of Butler was the top fundraiser with donations topping $3,000.
All funds help children in our community.
“We have monthly activities for the kids. The money will help us pay for trips to the zoo, to the ballpark, for crafts,” Steighner said.
The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Butler County program is always looking for volunteers. According to Steighner, there are currently 30 children waiting to be paired with matches, most of them boys.
“We’re always in need of volunteers and we’re really in need of men,” he said. “Probably 60 percent of the kids we get are boys but only 30 percent of the volunteers are men.”
