The Mars boys basketball team defeated Erie Strong Vincent 58-56 last night at Slippery Rock University’s Morrow Field House. Robby Carmody led the Planets with 21 points. Carmody hit a late shot for the victory. The Planets had built a 14-point lead at halftime, only to see Strong Vincent come back to tie the game late in the fourth quarter. Mars will meet Highlands Friday night in the PIAA Western Region quarterfinals. Highlands defeated Hollidaysburg 68-55 last night.
In another Triple-A second round game, New Castle defeated Beaver Falls 56-52 and will meet Bishop McDevitt Friday.
The Karns City girls were knocked out of the state tournament by North Star 50-30 last night.
In a Single-A Boys second round game: Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic defeated Bishop Carroll 66-55. The Trojans will meet 25-2 Kennedy Catholic Friday night.
North Allegheny defeated Pine-Richland 46-38. It sets up a rematch of the WPIAL championship with 27-0 Norwin who defeated Penn Hills 48-35 last night. The Tigers improved to 24-4.
Tonight in the Boys Quad-A second round: Pine-Richland (21-6) will face Taylor Allderdice (25-1) at Bethel Park high school. Tip-off is 7pm. Also at 7pm tonight in Altoona, 17-9 North Hills will meet 20-5 Carlisle.
Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic Girls face Keystone at IUP tonight.
