Police departments are under more pressure these days to equip their officers with body cameras, but there seems to be no immediate plans for the Pennsylvania State Police.
State Police Commissioner Tyree Blocker says one of the many obstacles to having state troopers wear the cameras is a concern about the state wiretapping laws.
“It would require a review of the current wire tape statute to ensure officers aren’t in violation,” Tyree said. “Because of their use of body cameras in private residences.”
Of course, the cost is also always a concern.
“The cost is significant,” he said. “Probably a better part of $2.5 million.”
Blocker said he is certainly not opposed to the idea and does support law enforcement using enhanced technologies.
