An early Wednesday morning fire in the city of Butler was caused by a man who fell asleep while smoking a cigarette.
The fire started about 1:45 a.m. in the 200 block of American Avenue.
Butler City Fire Chief Nick Ban said the man was on the second floor of the home when he fell asleep in a recliner while smoking. The cigarette caught the chair on fire.
There were six people inside the home, including two children, and all escaped safely. They are now staying with family members.
Damage is estimated at $5,000.
