A Western Pennsylvania cheese maker is among those accused of adding filler to their grated parmesan.
Castle Cheese, in the Slippery Rock area, has been under investigation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration since late 2012. Evidence was found that they were selling what they called 100% real parmesan cheese that included fillers like wood pulp and cheaper kinds of cheese.
According to a Bloomberg News report, Castle Cheese President Michelle Myrter is facing criminal charges that could lead to jail time and a large fine for the deception.
Castle stopped production of that product as a result of the investigation. They filed for bankruptcy in 2014.
