The WPIAL has announced that it will continue four football championships next season at Heinz Field, when classifications expand to six in Pennsylvania. Four title games will be played November 18th, with the two remaining championship games being played the following weekend at a site to be determined. Classifications for football, baseball, softball and boys and girls basketball will change from four to six in the 2016-17 school year.
High School Boys Basketball Wednesday: Redbank Valley-61 Karns City-56. Reese Barger led Karns City (10-11, 8-8) with 15 points
Union-67 Moniteau-63. Aaron Marterella and Derek Boben led Moniteau with 14 points each.
Keystone-57 AC Valley-22. Austin Heeter led A-C Valley (5-16, 2-14) with 11 points.
High School Wrestling Wednesday: Seneca Valley defeated Hempfield 33-25 in a non-section match.
The Butler Boys and Girls Bowlers swept 7-0 Karns City Wednesday (2-10-16) at Bruin Lanes. Senior Matt Wetzel led Butler with a 630 series that featured a high game of 221. Junior Nick Huff rolled a 619 series and clinched the high average for WPIBL Section 2 at 214.96. Senior Hunter Lefever added a 231 high game. Senior Nick Bonino rolled a game of 223 and Senior David Howell rolled a 200 game. (Match score: Butler-2960 Karns City-2204)
The Butler Boys finished the regular season 9-1 overall and took first place in Section 2. They have qualifed for the WPIBL Team Championships next Wednesday (February 17th) at AMF Noble Manor Lanes. With the first place section finish, the Butler Boys also have secured a spot in the Pa. Western Regional Team event Saturday, March 12th at North Versailles Lanes.
The Butler Girls were led by Sophomore Ashley McCue who rolled a 524 series and high game of 189. Sophomore Mercedes Belch had a high game of 209. The Butler Girls took second place in Section 2 with a 7-3 overall record. They will compete in the WPIBL Team Championships next Thursday, February 18th at Paradise Island Bowl.
The Armstrong Boys and Girls swept Knoch 7-0 Wednesday. The Armstrong Girls won Section 2 with a 10-0 record.
