A Butler Township police officer was bitten by a Butler City police dog Saturday.
Township Police Chief John Hays said the incident happened about 1:30 p.m. Saturday on Ewing Street. The two departments had teamed up to serve a warrant for 31-year-old Justin Tincha of Butler, who was known to run from officers.
While searching for Tincha inside the house, the city police dog, who was off leash, and its handler were in the basement. Township Officer Justin Welton came down the stairs and was bitten in the right thigh.
He was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital, treated and returned to work that day.
Chief Hays says since the township does not have a police dog, he’s unfamiliar with the procedures and policies of when a dog should be on and off leash. It’s not known if any action will be taken against the city police dog or handler.
The officers eventually did find Tincha and serve him a warrant.
