NASCAR and its Sprint Cup Series team owners have announced a nine-year agreement that grants NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Charters to thirty-six teams and establishes a council of owners that will have formal input into the management of the sport. The new system – which was unveiled Tuesday – is designed to provide improved financial certainty by guaranteeing sponsors continued participation for an extended period of time and increase the longterm market value of teams. The starting fields for Sprint Cup races have been reduced from forty-three cars to forty. Each of the thirty-six owners who have been granted a Charter has a guaranteed entry into the field of every Sprint Cup points race. The four remaining spots will be open to team owners who do not hold Charters. Teams that have been granted Charters are based primarily on being a fulltime active competitor over the last three years.
