Students at a local school have won a nationwide smartphone application design competition.
A representative from Verizon arrived at Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic High School Tuesday morning to inform students that their entry into the Innovative App Challenge was named best in nation.
Five students worked together to come up with an idea for an app called Safe Speed that would alert parents when a student’s phone was traveling above the speed limit for an extended period of time.
The team will now work to finish the app by mid-June so that they can present it at the Technology Student Association Conference in Nashville. Developers from MIT will assist the students with programming and graphic interfaces.
$20,000 in prize money will be used by North Catholic for future STEM related programs.
