The Slippery Rock University baseball team was ranked eighth in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Atlantic Region preseason poll, the organization announced Friday. Mercyhurst University, which advanced to the NCAA Division II World Series a season ago, was voted first after garnering 11 first-place votes and 127 points. Millersville University received two first-place votes and 112 points in second place. The Lakers and Marauders were followed in the top five by Seton Hill University (103), Winston-Salem State University (98) and Shepherd University (68). One of the premiere teams in NCAA Division II, Slippery Rock concluded the 2015 season with a 30-18 record, that included a berth into the PSAC Tournament, for the program’s 21st consecutive season without a losing record. The streak is the longest in the Atlantic Region and ninth best in the nation. The PSAC’s all-time winningest coach, Jeff Messer is back for his 31st season in charge of the SRU program. Messer begins the year with a career record of 924-558-5 (.623). He ranks eighth among active NCAA Division II head coaches in total wins.
