Butler Township administrators remain concerned that the ongoing state budget stalemate could leave them with a shortfall.
Butler Township Manager Ed Kirkwood told the township commissioners during a Monday meeting that if the budget situation remains unresolved, the township will only receive 40 percent of what they were promised in money from the liquid fuels tax. Kirkwood was given that information by the state department of transportation auditing department.
The township was expecting just over $450,000 March 1 and only getting 40 percent of that amount would force administrators to deviate from plans for how that money would be spent.
The money had been earmarked for items such as road salt and street lighting. Kirkwood believes the township should have enough funds to cover salt for this winter but money for street lighting would need to be borrowed from another part of the budget if the full state amount is not distributed by June or July.
The commissioners directed Kirkwood to send a letter to local state representatives expressing their desire for a solution to be reached.
