The Pittsburgh Steelers season ended Sunday night in Denver when the Broncos defeated the Steelers 23-16.
The Steelers were nursing a 13-12 lead in the fourth quarter, when running back Fitzgerald Toussaint lost a fumble in Denver territory. The Broncos scored their first touchdown of the day after recovering the football. Toussaint had scored the Steelers only touchdown of the game in the first quarter. Chris Boswell hit field goals of 43, 28 and 47 yards to account for the remaining Steelers points.
Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger threw for a playoff career-best 339 yards despite having a sprained shoulder. He tied Terry Bradshaw with his third 300-yard game in the postseason.
The Broncos will host the New England Patriots Sunday afternoon in the AFC Championship game. The Patriots ousted the Kansas City Chiefs 27-20 Saturday. Patriots coach Bill Belichick ties former Dallas Cowboys head coach Tom Landry with his 10th conference title game.
In the NFC Championship game, Carolina will host Arizona Sunday night. The Panthers defeated Seattle 31-24 Sunday after jumping out to a 31-0 lead at halftime. Arizona won a thriller over Green Bay 26-20 in overtime Saturday night.
