Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf has chosen to release some emergency funds for schools and human services as part of a line item veto of the most recent budget proposal.
“I am going to exercise my constitutional right to line item veto this ridiculous exercise in budget futility,” Wolf stated.
The governor made his statements as part of a press conference Tuesday morning in response to the House bill budget passed by the state senate and house last week. Wolf would not specify exactly how much funding would be released and when that would happen.
According to Wolf, the two biggest problems with the latest proposal are the fact that it is not a balanced budget and the cuts made in critical education funding.
“Let’s not kid ourselves, we still need a budget. We need one that actually adds up this year; we need one that adds up next year. We need one that fully funds our schools,” Wolf continued.
The governor remains hopeful that with pressure from voters, the legislature will send him an alternative proposal closer to a compromise Senate bill version of the budget.
