A minor who was driving a car that crashed in Mercer County in July tentatively has been identified by the government as the eighth person in the United States to die because of an explosive air bag inflator.
Officials say the 13-year-old boy was driving a relative’s 2001 Honda Accord when it left Route 58 and struck a fallen tree. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration learned of the death last week after a lawyer for the teen’s family contacted the agency.
The agency is now working with the family, the auto parts maker Takata and Honda to examine the vehicle in order to confirm the incident was a rupture-related fatality.
