Pennsylvania Turnpike officials are gearing up for a busy, long holiday weekend of travel.
More than 4.2 million vehicles are expected to travel the turnpike between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day.
The heaviest travelled days are predicted to be Thursday (Christmas Eve) and next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (Dec. 28-30).
To keep the highway safe and traffic flowing, all construction and maintenance work has been suspended and all lanes are open and will remain open through Jan. 3. Maintenance crews will be on patrol assisting with debris removal and to aid with any emergencies.
State Police will also be out in full force looking for drunk drivers, speeders and aggressive motorists.
Turnpike officials remind drivers to take advantage of TripTalk, the turnpike’s smartphone app. It provides users with audio alerts on road conditions and closures.
Officials say this season’s travel may be record-breaking due to unseasonably warm weather and low fuel prices.
