Butler Township is not changing the part of their zoning ordinance that deals with the drilling of oil and gas.
At a meeting Monday, a motion to amend the current ordinance to further restrict the placement of well pads fell short of a needed majority.
Commissioners Charles Nedz and Sam Zurzolo voted against the measure, while Commissioners Joe Hasychak and Dave Zarnick voted in favor of the change. Commissioner Joe Wiest was not present.
Nedz believed the amended ordinance would not permit adequate coverage for all residents to be able to sell their mineral rights as is the law. Zurzolo said he voted against the proposal after a judge recently ruled in favor of Middlesex Township in a dispute with a group of residents opposed to the Geyer wells.
A public hearing was held back in May on this possible change and the final vote was delayed until township officials were able to gather the most recent legal information.
