Officials estimate one in every two people ordered something online yesterday during Cyber Monday, and now…experts are offering tips to help cut down on package thefts.
Mail carriers are expected to deliver more than 600 million packages between now and Christmas, giving thieves lots of time to snatch an order from a doorstep before the customer sees it.
Authorities say thieves have been known to follow the UPS, FedEx or mail trucks to see where packages are being dropped off. And, some many drive around a neighborhood to try and figure out if someone is home or not.
So what should you do to keep your packages safe?
The most basic tip comes down to not having a package delivered when no one is there to receive it. Instead, check to see if your package can be rerouted to work…or leave instructions telling a delivery driver where to leave a package. In some cases, you can also request an order to be delivered to a warehouse where you can then go pick it up.
Even if you’re not shopping online you can still be susceptible to theft. Police say to be extremely careful with leaving bags in your car during a shopping trip. Thefts from cars in shopping center parking lots increase this time of year as well.
