The Muslim cab driver who was shot in Pittsburgh on Thanksgiving Day was reportedly employed by a local taxi service.
The 38-year-old (who has not been identified) drove a man from the Rivers Casino to the Hazelwood neighborhood of Pittsburgh. At the end of the ride, the suspect said he left his wallet in the house. A few minutes later, he returned with a rifle and started shooting.
The driver reportedly has been working for Cranberry Taxi Service for about a month. The service is an affiliate of the Pittsburgh-based Star Transportation Group, which covers Butler and northern Allegheny County.
A Muslim civil rights group has asked the Justice Department to investigate the shooting as a hate crime. They say during the trip, the suspect allegedly asked the driver about his heritage, ISIS and mocked the prophet, Muhammad.
A GoFundMe account has been set up to help with the driver’s medical expenses as he recovers at UPMC Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh.
A search is still underway for the shooter. So far, no arrests have been made.
