The Slippery Rock University football team will play in the NCAA Division II National Quarterfinals after they beat visiting Assumption College on Saturday by a final 0f 41-39.
Slippery Rock started the game well, scoring three first quarter touchdowns. The Green and White controlled the second quarter as well, and went into halftime with a 27-12 lead. In the second half, Assumption College started to rally back, as they scored 20 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. In the final minutes of the game though, the Slippery Rock defense prevailed with several big plays from cornerback Titus Howard.
Howard, a Pitt transfer, made two big plays for SRU during the closing minutes of the game. After Assumption’s final touchdown, Howard batted away a two point conversion pass, and then intercepted a pass on Assumption’s last drive with two minutes to go.
Leading the way offensively for Slippery Rock was quarterback Dante Nania. He threw for 148 yards and three scores, and rushed for 34 yards and another touchdown. Harlon Hill candidate Shamar Greene played a stellar game as well, finishing with 160 yards rushing and one touchdown.
Defensively for Slippery Rock, Derek Morgan was the leading tackler with 12, and defensive linemen Cody Conway and Marcus Martin finished with 9 tackles and 7 tackles respectively, in addition to one sack each.
