The Slippery Rock University football team defeated Virginia Union 40-21 Saturday in the opening round of the NCAA Division II championship tournament. The Rock will now host Assumption this Saturday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium for a noon kick-off in the second round.
Saturday’s game marked the first home playoff game since 1999 and the first playoff victory since 1998, when the team reached the national semifinals. The Rock are now 6-0 this season, and have won 16 straight home games, which ties Minnesota-Duluth for the longest active home winning streak among all Division II programs.
