The Slippery Rock University football team moved up one more place to No. 9 in this week’s American Football Coaches Association Division II national poll. The Rock has not appeared inside the top 10 since the final regular season poll of the 1999 season when the program was ranked No. 2. The Rock now leads all NCAA Division II programs in scoring offense at 47.5 points per game and rushing defense, allowing just 64.0 rushing yards per game. The Rock will visit Eastern Division champion West Chester at noon Saturday with hopes of becoming the first repeat PSAC champion since the title game was reinstated in 2008. Hear the game on The Rock Station 97.7fm beginning at 11:30am.
Despite moving up in the top 10 of the national poll this week, The Rock remained No. 4 in the third set of Super Region One rankings released by the NCAA Selection Committee. The NCAA Regional Rankings are used to determine the 28-team field that will compete for the NCAA Division II National Championship when the playoffs begin Nov. 21. Today’s ranking are the final public set of rankings and the final selections will be announced at 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15. The top seven teams in the region will earn a berth in the NCAA playoffs, with the No. 1 seed earning a first round bye and seed Nos. 2-4 earning a first round home game.
The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference champion Slippery Rock University men’s soccer team saw its season come to a heartbreaking end Monday night with the announcement of the NCAA Division II National Tournament field.
The Rock, winners of five straight games, including the PSAC semifinal over top seeded Mercyhurst and the PSAC title game over second seeded Millersville, were denied one of the four tournament berths from the Atlantic Region.
While most NCAA championship fields include an automatic bid for conference champions, the Division II men’s soccer field does not have an automatic qualifier in the Atlantic Region due to the relatively small number of teams competing in the region.
