The city of Butler is holding off on plans to appeal the recently reassessed taxable value of a downtown building.
On recommendation of the City Solicitor, council has chosen to wait until the former Broad Street School is sold to a for profit business before challenging the assessment. Council voted unanimously Thursday to appeal the decision by the county to lower the taxable value of the building following a challenge by the Butler School Board.
The Butler School Board petitioned the county for a reassessment that would lower the taxes to be owed on their closed buildings in an effort to encourage offers.
Even though it would cost an undetermined amount of money to appeal, Mayor Tom Donaldson believes the city must protect against future losses if and when the building is sold.
