A Slippery Rock cheese company has been charged for misbranding imitation cheeses as real.
Universal Cheese & Drying, International Packing, and Castle Cheese, which are all controlled by one top official, have been charged in federal court. Castle Cheese was the maker of several varieties of cheese; Universal dried, chopped and sold the product under various labels; International Packing packaged it and also sold it.
Prosecutors allege the companies sold imitation Parmesan and Romano cheese with labels saying it was 100 percent real when it wasn’t.
Each of the companies will pay roughly $500,000 each as part of a plea deal. Officials say they all have fully cooperated with the Food and Drug Administration’s investigation and have remedied the problems.
Officials say consumer’s health or safety was never jeopardized.
