Former Pittsburgh Penguins head coach “Red” Kelly passed away in Toronto Thursday at the age of 91. Kelly was the Pens second coach from 1969-73 and served as their general manager from 1970-72. More than 200 of the top female hockey players announced via social media Thursday that they will not play this year, forcing the Canadian Women’s Hockey League to shut down. Their complaint included lack of pay. Many were paid as little as $2,000 per year. This leaves just the United States-based National Women’s Hockey League as the only option in North America. THe NWHL will play in its fifth year, offering salary increases and a revenue split of league-level sponsorships and media rights.
