A downtown business is seeking a refund from the city after an overpayment of taxes the past five years.
Butler City Treasurer Jeff Smith informed city council that Rite Aid paid $88,000 in business privilege tax since 2010 to the city for a store that is actually located in California.
Once this accounting error was found, Rite Aid asked for a full refund of the money but the law is that only the last three years must be refunded…which adds up to $55,000.
Council is expected to approve that the funds be repaid as they become available, which means a discount will be applied to future tax income from Rite Aid.
