The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-6 Sunday to sweep their three-game series, and hand the Bucs their eighth consecutive loss. Melky Cabrera it two home runs in the game, going 4-for-5 scoring three runs and driving in three. Josh Bell added two more of the Pirates nine hits. Rookie Bryan Reynolds had a pinch-hit single, and has now had a hit in all seven games to begin his major league career.
The Pirates built a 5-1 lead for Trevor Williams through the first two innings, but Williams couldn’t hold the Dodgers down. He allowed five runs on eight hits and left with the game tied. Reliever Richard Rodriguez allowed two runs, one earned in 1/3rd of an inning and took the loss.
The Pirates are off today and begin a two-game series with the Texas Rangers in Arlington Tuesday. They have fallen to 12-14 overall and 4-1/2 behind the first-place St. Louis Cardinals.
The Pirate injury bug continues. The Bucs have placed starting pitcher Chris Archer on the 10-day injured list with a thumb issue.
Tyler Glasnow, who was part of the trade with Tampa Bay for Archer, continues to roll. He earned his fifth win of the season Sunday, allowing two runs over 6-2/3rds innings and striking out nine.
The Chicago White Sox tied a major league record by striking out 20 batters in their game against Detroit Sunday. Starting pitcher Reynoldo Lopez struck out a career-high 14 over six innings.
