Outlaw country singer David Allan Coe owes the Internal Revenue Service nearly half a million dollars, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Ohio.
Coe, 76, was one of the most-notable voices in the outlaw country scene when the genre took shape in the ‘70s. At his advanced age he still tours regularly, although his health has diminished. He’s known for his prickly attitude and sometimes raunchy lyrics.
Court records state that he plays nearly 100 concerts yearly and always asked to be paid upfront in cash, which the U.S. Attorney’s Office says was a way to keep the IRS from levying fees from his bank account.
Officials said in the release that he never accepted $50 bills because he was superstitious and thought them to be “bad luck.”
On Monday he plead guilty to one count of impeding and obstructing the due administration of IRS laws. Coe now faces a maximum of three years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
