A joint meeting of representatives from the City of Butler, Butler Township, and Center Township about a regional police force has resulted in an agreement to have another meeting in the future.
“With more police, you could target traffic better…you could be more pro-active on drugs. Drugs are a huge problem,” City Councilman Mike Walter said during a meeting Monday night.
Walter admitted that nothing would be able to happen immediately but he is in favor of forming a police commission committee to look into what a partnership might look like.
Other representatives agreed that more information about the merging process is needed before decisions are made about investing money into a plan that might not make financial sense for everyone involved.
“I have no problem whatsoever spending money,” Butler Township Manager Ed Kirkwood said. “But I have a real big problem wasting money. If there’s not going to be a good end result that’s beneficial, I can’t advise my board to find money in their budget. Not whenever I can use it to pave more roads or do some other service to the community.”
Walter is planning on contacting people who work with the state to see if they would be willing to attend a future meeting to discuss grants that might be available for a merger of this kind.
