The three volunteer fire departments in Butler Township are one step closer to merging.
The process- involving Fire District 3, Mercer Road and the South Butler volunteer fire departments- began in May and is not expected to be complete until the first of the new year, but the departments will begin to be dispatched as one on Dec. 1.
The merger will allow the township to save money and improve coordination of efforts, training and equipment use across the municipality.
The three relief associations affiliated with the departments will also merge in a separate process.
