Two Pennsylvania Turnpike interchanges are set to go cashless in a trial program before state officials decide to possibly do away with toll collectors all together.
The turnpike commission picked two busy interchanges on opposite ends of the state to make the switch to an all-electronic tolling system: the Beaver Valley Expressway and the Delaware River Bridge in Bucks County. Drivers must use E-ZPass or have their license plates scanned by interchange cameras and pay a monthly bill mailed to them. The change will begin next year.
The trial is a way to stall a plan set in motion during former Governor Tom Corbett’s administration to convert the entire highway to a cashless system. At that time, state officials said the goal was to cut costs.
