Fourteen people from Western Pennsylvania- including one from Butler County- are among the Red Cross volunteers heading to areas expected to be hit by Hurricane Florence.
Dan Tobin- from the Red Cross Western PA Region- says more volunteers weren’t initially sent because they’ve been busy dealing with flooding here.
“Originally, they were thinking we were going to get another 7-10 inches of rain here,” Tobin said. “We kept a lot of volunteers local in case they were needed here due to additional flooding.”
If the storm behaves the way the latest projections forecast, Tobin expects a lot more people and vehicles to be dispatched to the East Coast beginning next week.
Most of the people who have already been sent down will be working in shelters, supervising shelter workers, assisting with health needs, logistics and acting as government liaisons.
Hurricane Florence is expected to be the most intense storm to strike the Carolina coast in 25 years.
