One person was killed and another rescued Monday from a dangerous section of a Lawrence County creek.
WPXI is reporting that 17-year-old Bruce Thomas Jr. of New Castle was killed while he was swimming in the Connoquenessing Creek in Ellwood City. Thomas was swimming with another man who had to be rescued. A third person, a girl, was also swimming with the boys but was able to pull herself out.
Crews had to travel 40 feet down steep, wooded terrain to even get to the water where the boys were swimming. They then had to use chainsaws to cut a path through the deep brush.
Officials say that section of the water is deep and dangerous with an unpredictable undertow. Rescue equipment, ropes and dive teams were all brought in for the rescue and later the recovery.
