Major League Baseball Playoffs:
–Former Pirate David Freese had a key two-run pinch hit to help Los Angeles Dodgers eliminate the Atlanta Braves with a 6-2 victory Monday in their National League Division Series. The Dodgers won the best-of-five series 3-1 and will visit Milwaukee to open the National League Championship Series.
–Houston defeated Cleveland 11-3 in Game Three of their American League Divisional Series and swept the Indians 3-0. The Astros have moved on to the American League Championship Series.
–Boston defeated the New York Yankees 16-1 last night and have taken a 2-1 series lead in their best-of-five Divisional Series. Game Four is tonight at Yankee Stadium. Another former Pirates, Brock Holt, became the first player to hit for the cycle in a post-season game. (single, double, triple and home run).
The “Game 7 Gang” will host their annual celebration of the Pirates’ 1960 World Series Game Seven victory Saturday at the Forbes Field Wall in Oakland. Opening remarks begin at 12:15pm and the radio rebroadcast of the game will start at 12:50pm. The event is free. The Pirates defeated the New York Yankees to win the World Series thanks to the famous Bill Mazeroski home run.
Altoona Curve third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes has won his second straight Gold Glove award. The 21-year old had just six errors in 278 chances during the season, for a .978 fielding percentage. It was the best in all of minor league baseball, setting a Curve franchise record. It was also the best fielding percentage in the Eastern League since statistics became available in 1959.
